Stress and Burnout Therapy for Adult Professionals in Johnson City, TN

4–6 minutes
stress and burnout therapy for adult professionals

The alarm goes off and you are already tired. You get through the meetings, answer the messages, handle what everyone needs you to handle. Then you sit in the driveway for a minute before walking inside, because that minute is the only part of the day that belongs to you.

Forest Path Therapy Group provides stress and burnout therapy for adult professionals in Johnson City, TN, with in-office sessions at the Northridge Centre, secure online therapy across Tennessee, and Walk & Talk sessions throughout the Tri-Cities. I am Tommy South, LCSW, a licensed therapist with more than five years of community mental health experience and extensive training in stress and burnout. The practice accepts Aetna, BlueCross BlueShield, Cigna, and other major plans, and every new client can start with a free consultation.

Why you feel burned out even when you’re handling everything

You may not look like you are falling apart. You may still be performing. Deadlines get met, families get fed, problems get solved. The cost shows up privately, in a short fuse, a flat mood, and sleep that never quite restores anything.

Plenty of capable adults reach a point where they feel burned out and exhausted no matter what they do, and more effort, the tool that has always worked before, only digs the hole deeper. For many professionals, the clearest warning sign is that they can’t stop thinking about work even at home, replaying conversations at dinner and drafting emails at midnight.

That pressure rarely stays at work either. Burnout eats the patience and attention a relationship runs on, which is why the same strain that shows up in your inbox often shows up in your marriage, and why some people also find that couples counseling for communication problems becomes part of the picture.

Burnout rarely announces itself. It builds quietly until the work you have always handled starts handling you. For most people, that is when individual therapy for adults moves from something they have thought about to something they actually do.

What stress and burnout therapy actually looks like

Therapy with me is a working conversation, not an hour of talking into silence while someone nods. Each session starts with a check-in on how the week actually went, then we choose what would be most useful to work on that day.

From there, we do two things at once. We build insight into the patterns keeping you stuck, and we develop concrete skills you can use between sessions, at work, at home, and at 2am when your mind will not shut off. Depending on your goals, I draw on cognitive behavioral therapy, DBT-based skills, solution-focused work, and motivational interviewing. You never need to know those names for the work to help.

I pay attention to both symptom changes and what is actually improving in your daily life. Better sleep, a steadier temper, evenings that feel like yours again. Realistic change, built one week at a time.

Will my therapist actually understand this kind of pressure?

I am Tommy South, LCSW, a retired Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant, a business owner, a husband, and a father, and the kind of pressure you live with is familiar territory for me. Hard decisions, people depending on you, and work that follows you home are things I know from my own life, not just from training.

My style is collaborative, practical, and down-to-earth. I will not judge you, and I will not pretend what you are doing is working when it is not.

Where sessions happen: office, online, or outdoors

You can meet in person at my Johnson City office in the Northridge Centre, or through secure online sessions from anywhere in Tennessee.

There is a third option. For adults who spend most of their workweek under fluorescent lights, Walk & Talk Therapy sessions on trails and green spaces around the Tri-Cities can make the hour feel less like one more meeting on the calendar. It is real therapy, held outdoors, and we can talk through whether it fits your situation.

Questions people ask before reaching out

How do I know if I’m burned out or just stressed?

Stress usually eases when the pressure lets up, and when it stops easing, that can be a sign it has become something more persistent. If rest no longer restores you, if you feel cynical or detached about work you used to care about, and if exhaustion has become your baseline, those are worth taking seriously. You do not need to label it correctly before starting. Therapy helps in either case.

Do you take insurance?

Yes. Forest Path accepts several major plans, including Aetna, BlueCross BlueShield, and Cigna, and the same insurance and fees apply whether you meet in the office, online, or outdoors. Carelon Behavioral Health, Ascension SmartHealth, and Quest Behavioral Health are also accepted, along with private pay.

What happens in the first session?

We talk. I ask what is going on, when it started, how it is affecting your work, health, and relationships, and what you want to be different. It is a conversation, not an intake interrogation, and you will not be reduced to a checklist.

I barely have time to breathe. How often would we meet?

Most clients meet weekly or every other week for 45 to 60 minutes, with some meeting monthly. The rhythm depends on your schedule and how aggressively you want to work, and we decide it together rather than forcing your life around a fixed formula.

The first step is one conversation

You have spent a long time being the person who handles it. You do not have to figure this part out alone, either. You do not need a diagnosis or a tidy explanation to schedule a free consultation. “Something is off, and I want it to be different” is reason enough.
